Watch Out: A Rare But Serious Tick Threat Hits the Northeast

By Horizon Pest Control

As tick season heats up here in New Jersey, a rare but serious danger has emerged in the Northeast—Powassan virus. Recently, a resident of Hancock County, Maine, was hospitalized with this viral infection after a tick bite caused alarming neurological symptoms.

What Makes Powassan Virus Different (and Dangerous)

  • Transmission happens fast. Unlike Lyme disease, which typically requires 36–48 hours of tick attachment, Powassan virus can spread in as little as 15 minutes.
  • Symptoms can be severe. Initial signs include fever, headache, vomiting, and weakness—but in rare cases, the virus can inflame the brain and spinal cord, causing confusion, seizures, and loss of coordination.
  • The stakes are high. Although cases are rare—only 7 or 8 per year—they’re on the rise, especially in the Northeast and Great Lakes region. Up to 15% of severe cases can be fatal, and around half of survivors may suffer lasting neurological damage.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Family

Since there’s no vaccine or specific treatment for Powassan virus, prevention is essential:

  • Dress smart. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and tuck pants into socks when walking in brushy areas.
  • Use EPA-registered repellents. Preferably containing at least 20% DEET to keep ticks at bay.
  • Check for ticks. Do a thorough full-body check—and don’t forget pets! Catching and removing ticks early can make all the difference.
  • Yard care matters. Keep grass trimmed and create a “tick moat” with gravel or wood chips around your home’s perimeter.

Why This Matters

Here in New Jersey, our wooded areas and humid climate make tick awareness a year-round commitment—not just a springtime concern. Staying informed and proactive is the best way to keep your family safe from hidden threats like Powassan virus.
