How To Protect Yourself

  • Use EPA-approved insect repellents (DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus*)
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants when outdoors
  • Treat clothing with permethrin (never apply directly to skin)
  • Eliminate standing water and maintain your property
  • Perform tick checks and shower within 2 hours of outdoor activity
*Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus should not be used on children under 3 years old.

How To Remove a Tick From a Person or Pet

  • Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  • Pull straight upward with steady, even pressure. Do not twist, jerk, squeeze, burn, or cover the tick with petroleum jelly or nail polish.
  • Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
  • Watch for rash, fever, or unusual symptoms. If your pet seems ill, contact your veterinarian.
